I can imagine you thinking what is he talking about? Just pack what you need and go. Sadly it does not work this way. When you are leaving all your belongings behind at home and suddenly your whole life should be shaped by things of approximate weight 11 kilograms it's easier said than done. My journey will take 90 days in SE Asia. And most of the nights I will be sleeping under the stars.
Light-packing! I have never imagined I could do something like this. My idea of traveling always was like it is in a movies. 2 big suitcases, Hawaiian shirt, glasses, a hat and pockets full of money. American style. Or am I wrong? I was wrong. I was really wrong. Traveling like this is utterly about something else. It's only about what is in your backpack and it's not a lot. Reducing all your daily needs to 11 Kgs is not easy. But there is a way and it's proven by many travelers. So let's see what you need for about 90 nights in the wilderness of Asia. Backpack with a rain cover Small luggage for shorter trips Documents + copies of your passport + passport pictures Personal hygiene Disinfection hand gel Fast drying ultra light towel (microfiber) Light waterproof jacket and pants Jumper
Scarf T-shirt from Merino wool (2 short-sleeved, 1 long-sleeved) 5 pieces of underwear and socks Swim shorts + shorts Flip flops + the shoes you wear Earplugs and sleeping mask Phone with music (access to the internet) with earphones or a tablet Camera Power bank Notepad with pen
Mosquito net Torchlight Sunglasses Knife or Swiss knife Spoon
Mess tin
Lighter Sewing Small lock Parachute rope Pepper spray First aid kit and medicaments Water filter Good insurance Waterproof tent Sleeping bag Insect spray Toilet paper Emergency food reserve (protein bar, bag with nuts, dried fruits) 50 dollars / pounds in case of emergency All these things are for warm climate. To cold areas or hot areas you need different type of things. All these should be basic things to take. Looking at it now and counting about 35 items seems to be a lot more than 11 Kgs. Do not be scared if it's going to be more than that. 11 Kgs is my idea of light-packing to somebody else it can be 14 Kgs or more. At the end it can look like this.
